Togut Segal & Segal has been engaged by Steward Health Care Systems LLC and 166 of its affiliated debtors in their chapter 11 cases in the Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas, as special counsel for the purpose of pursuing the avoidance and recovery of more than $300 million in potential preferential transfers pursuant to Chapter 5 of the Bankruptcy Code from more than 600 transferees.
Steward was previously the largest private, physician-owned health care network in the U.S. Headquartered in Dallas, Texas, the debtors’ operations on the Petition Date included 31 hospitals across eight states, approximately 400 facility locations, 4,500 primary and specialty care physicians, 3,600 staffed beds, and a company-wide workforce of nearly 30,000 employees that provide care to more than two million patients annually.
The debtors filed the chapter 11 cases on May 6, 2024 in the Bankruptcy Court for the Souther District of Texas. On February 3, 2025, the Bankruptcy Court approved the employment of Togut Segal & Segal as special counsel. More information about the debtors’ cases can be found here.
